Granitesurf Hand -Planes are built to last and arrive ready for use against the elements. However you must take care of your new hand-plane to ensure a long and stress free life! Please rinse the hand-plane in fresh water after each use and do not expose to heat sources to dry. It is a natural product and needs protection from extremes of heat and cold.
The hand-plane has been sealed with *Tung Oil, a natural nut oil that is highly water resistant and hard wearing. Periodically it requires resealing to keep your hand-plane looking and working as new.
Tung Oil can be readily sourced via the internet. We use a 100% Tung Oil available from https://www.uulki.com/en/shop/uulki-pure-tung-oil
After removing the strap (if applicable) use a soft cloth to rub a small amount of natural Tung Oil all over the handplane and allow to soak in. Remove any excess with a dry cloth and leave overnight in a warm room. The Tung Oil will dry and harden providing further protection to your hand-plane. The frequency depends on use however we would recommend regular treatment to protect your hand-plane.
* please note if you have a nut allergy you might prefer to use Natural Linseed Oil instead
