The granite Hand-Plane Range

Introduction

Each Hand-Plane is developed and shaped to exacting standards. The brand name is precision laser cut into each unique piece and the traditional hand finishing of the outline and rails gives each one some real soul and character! To continue the Guernsey roots of each Hand-Plane in the range they are given names that reflect Guernsey places and heritage. Each Hand-Plane is available with a traditional hand hole grip (providing easy use in either hand and room for your hand to move) or an adjustable strap with stainless steel fittings (this allows for a natural open hand position providing precise control) GRANITE HAND-PLANES - BORN IN GUERNSEY.

granite

Granite is everywhere in Guernsey! It is visible in the architecture of the houses, the sea walls that protect the coastline and in the walls that divide the interior landscape. It is also present in the grit and determination of the local population and their passion for the beautiful Baliwick of Guernsey. It has a history linked throughout the centuries and the quarries were a major part of island life in the past. The Granite Hand-Plane is based on the same hard working, rugged principles that are embedded into the rock of granite. Built to last and tough against the elements. Wind, Waves and Tides.

The Granite Hand-Plane was the first to be developed in the range and is the most versatile and popular shape. It has a wide point forward of the handle that provides good flotation, a larger planing surface and easy entry into waves. The outline shape then tapers to a rounded diamond tail at the back of the hand-plane. This provides a sharper, more pivotal turning experience over a rounded tail. The rails are rounded at the front and smoothly blend into a hard edge release at the rear. The subtle front rocker prevents pearling and splash and the concave running through the base provides lift off the wave face. The fun and exhilaration of body-surfing is provided by the Granite Hand-plane creating a large planing surface under the palm of your hand. A great aesthetic all-rounder in and out of the water.

vraic

In traditional Guernsey French (the local language) seaweed is known as vraic. It was commonly picked from beaches or drifting in the sea after high tides or storms. It was so highly prized that many risked their lives to collect it for agriculture or heating homes. The Granitesurf Vraic is one of the smaller hand-planes in the range and is shaped with a traditional swallow-tail to provide 2 release points on the tail. This creates a lively hand-plane that works well in a wide range of conditions. It is especially suited for larger, steeper waves such as those encountered in the old days when vraic was, and still is, deposited onto the beaches and rocks!

The rails are fully rounded at the nose and drawn out to a hard rail release towards the back for maximum hold. A larger rocker entry through the nose to reduce splashing and a concave base provide lift and stability.

It is one of the most popular hand-planes in the range and has a beautiful aesthetic making it a pleasure to own.

cornet

Standing proud and protecting the entrance to St. Peter Port for generations Castle Cornet has stood firm against the winter storms, wild winds, crashing waves and even civil wars since the 13th Century. It is part of the vista that greets boats arriving into the island and its commanding position protecting the ‘Town’ is clear to see. Connected in more recent times by the Castle Pier and Emplacement it provides safe harbour from the weather for numerous water craft and the seafront buildings of St Peter Port.

The Granitesurf Cornet Hand-Plane is built like its namesake. A really well proportioned, aesthetic hand-plane with loads of features built-in to perform in all conditions. The precise drawn in nose gives more control in steeper, barreling waves. Having the wide point behind the handle and right under the palm of your hand provides a powerful planing surface and the wider diamond tail combines lift with control. Suitable for a wide range of body-surfers the larger front rocker gives easy entry into waves with minimum splash while the rails are soft and fully rounded at the front blending into a hard release at the rear. Equally at home in the crashing waves like a castle protecting a town or adorning your interior at home the Cornet Hand-Plane is a pleasure to use and own.
